Abstract

Demographic transition in Chile has experienced rapid progress which has resulted in an aging population, a phenomenon that poses challenges to public policies, genera- ting profound changes in economic, social issues and health related. This phenomenon has produced an expected increase in chronic diseases, such as hearing loss associated with aging and disability resulting from this. For all this, we must clearly define the areas in which progress should be made, with a focus on implementation of public health policies for the management of this disease. Accordingly, problems associated with hea- ring loss screening, recommendations and recommended age, aspects of unilateral or binaural implementation, adherence to use and selectionof hearing aids, ending with recommendations for monitoring these patients. Finally, we believe that hearing loss interventions in the elderly require from primary health care to identify and correctly derive and secondary level for implementation of hearing aids, rehabilitation and follow- up strategies to ensure the success of therapy.
