Abstract

Introduction: Motion sickness is a condition with a high prevalence among the young population, characterized by the emergence of symptoms that typically occur in transportation settings or in the presence of complex visual stimuli. Although the vestibular system plays a clear role in symptom manifestation, motion sickness is associated in individuals with vestibular disorders and individuals without vestibular disorders. Material and Methods: A cross-sectional observational study was conducted. 52 participants, divided into a study group (with motion sickness) and a control group (without motion sickness). The MSSQ-Short questionnaire, Sensitized Romberg test, video Head Impulse Test (v-HIT), and Subjective Visual Vertical (SVV) were administered. Results: In the Sensitized Romberg test, the study group had an average duration of 44.48 seconds, while the control group had 55.92 seconds, showing a statistically significant difference. In the v-HIT, the study group had an average gain of 1.12 for the right ear and 1.22 for the left ear, whereas the control group had an average gain of 1.29 for the right ear and 1.23 for the left ear. Regarding the SVV results, the study group had an average absolute deviation value of 2.65, while the control group had 2.63. Conclusion: While no significant differences have been observed between the compared groups, the detailed analysis of static balance results and the low self-perception of balance in the study group suggest the need for further research to delve into this potential difference in future studies.
