Abstract

Introduction: Accidents with foreign bodies (FB) are a nosologically entity that occupies a lot of the work of the ENT doctors. These traumas produce temporary or permanent seque­lae. Method: A descriptive, retrospective study, analyzing data of patients admitted with foreign bodies at the emergency services at the referral hospital in a specific African country consecutively over the period of 5 years (2007-2011). Results: From the study period, 706 patients were observed with an average of 141 patients per year. The age mean was 16 years. The patient profile was evidenced in children under 9 years old (41.4%; 292/706), males (52%; 367/706); cotton (47.30%; 334/706) the most predominant FB and otalgia, the most frequent symptom (58.07%; 410/706). Discussion: In Africa, due to the lack of specialized personnel, extraction work is carried out by poorly qualified personnel. Conclusions: Ear foreign bodies are a very common nosologically entity in the emergency of ENT, especially in children. Awareness campaign is recommended to sensitize the community to prevent its occurrence.
