Abstract

Introduction: Within the areas of development of Otorhinolaryngology, oncological surgery and head and neck surgery are included. The disclosure of scientific articles has become relevant as an indicator of excellence of an institution. The main means of disseminating our specialty in Chile is the Journal of Otorhinolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery. Evaluating the scientific production of this discipline allows us to identify and promote the development of this area from Otorhinolaryngology. Objectives: to evaluate research activity by analyzing the studies published in the Journal of Otorhinolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery from 2010 to 2020 in the areas of oncology and head and neck surgery. Material and Methods: a retrospective study was carried out in which all the articles published in the Journal of Otorhinolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery between the years 2010 and 2020 were analyzed. Results: during the considered period, 530 works cataloged as research articles, clinical case or review. 138 articles were included, corresponding to 26% of the total published articles. Of these, 45% were head and neck cancers, the remaining 55% were non-oncological head and neck surgeries. 21.7% of the total were in general oncology, 8% salivary gland and 6% skull base. Discussion and Conclusion: when evaluating the scientific activity in the last 10 years, the constant presence of articles related to the subspecialty of oncology and head and neck surgery can be observed, which has been increasing over the years. Although the publication of scientific articles does not fully demonstrate the activity related to the subspecialty of oncology and head and neck surgery by members of SOCHIORL, it allows us to observe a reflection of it, being able to identify a continuous development in otorhinolaryngology of this subspecialty in our country.
